this is so stupid. First let me say I am VERY well aware of the real history behind Pocahontas - and behind the massacre of Native Americans by colonists - and I am very well aware that what they did was so wrong, just coming to someone’s and and making it their own - but at least get it right.
Pocahontas (the film) is an obvious re-imagining of this particular story. Highly fantasized and it deviates from true history in a lot of ways.
So?
No one denies that. It wasn’t a documentary. It was an ANIMATED FILM geared towards CHILDREN.
And the other thing - this film’s commentary on the “white man” is a negative one! It immediately paints the picture of the Native Americans as a peace-loving people, and the colonists as money-hungry brutes.
The “Savages” sequence shows two sides on edge with eachother, and why each felt the other was wrong, but the film (through the narrative and role of Pocahontas’ herself) makes it clear who was REALLY wrong AND why - the colonists, because they simply had no right.
It’s an idealized version of a story. It’s a CARTOON. It is its OWN story.
The themes of respecting nature, respecting different cultures, choosing doing the right thing, both FOR and OVER love… what about those? What about all the good this film DID try to teach?
People really need to get over themselves.
Ah, yes. Educating children about historical events by “re-imagining” them via the classic “noble savage” trope. Totally harmless.
So sorry someone ruined your Pretty, Pretty Princess party.
Go
educatefuck yourself.
White tears.
